Wood sage flowers from July to September on acid, poor soils, on woodland edges and in clearings. Its greenish-yellow flowers have no upper lip; the stamens project freely forwards. It is visited by honeybees and wild bees alike and is an important late-summer forage on poor sandy soils. British measurements give around 174 micrograms of sugar per flower per day, around 9,214 pollen grains per flower and a nectar yield of around 105 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
