The purple willow flowers in March and April on stream banks, gravel bars and in floodplain forests. Its catkins are slender and at first bear reddish anthers, hence the name. It provides pollen and a little nectar and is part of the early willow forage that gets the colony going. It is often planted for bank stabilisation and is therefore within reach of many apiaries.
