The Pontic rhododendron flowers in May and June with large violet flowers. It comes from the Black Sea region and Iberia and has become naturalised in many places in Western Europe. It provides plenty of nectar, but this contains grayanotoxin. Pure honey from it is the intoxicating honey known as mad honey and is harmful to humans. Where it grows in large numbers, the harvest should be tested. British measurements give around 1.3 milligrams of sugar per flower per day, around 59,475 pollen grains per flower and a nectar yield of around 197 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
