Grey willow flowers in March and April in carr woodland, bogs, and along wet ditches. It remains shrubby and forms dense stands, which are often the only early forage in damp places. Its catkins appear before the leaves and are visited heavily in mild weather. For apiaries on the edge of wetlands it is an important help for the colonies' start into the season. British measurements give around 36 micrograms of sugar per flower per day and a nectar yield of around 3,612 kilograms of sugar per hectare per year.
