The Flat Sea Holly flowers from July to September with steel-blue flower heads above a ring of spiny bracts. It comes from eastern Europe and is planted in gravel and prairie plantings. Despite its thistle-like appearance it belongs to the carrot family. It provides nectar very well and is besieged for weeks in high summer. British measurements give around 13 micrograms of sugar per flower per day.
