Saw-wort flowers from July to September in litter meadows, on woodland margins and in poor meadows with fluctuating moisture. Its slender purple flower heads look thistle-like, but the plant is unarmed. It used to provide a yellow dye. It gives nectar well and is a valuable late flow on extensively managed meadows.
