The Box Elder flowers in April before the leaves emerge. It comes from North America, has become naturalised along riverbanks and stands out because of its pinnate leaves, which are more reminiscent of an ash. The male trees provide plenty of pollen early on, but hardly any nectar. In floodplain forests and on fallow land it supplements the willow flow in early spring.
