Crack willow flowers in April along rivers, ditches and in floodplain forests. It grows into a stately tree, and its twigs break off easily at the base, which gave it its name. Flowering old trees bear a great many catkins and are visited correspondingly heavily. In river lowlands it is one of the most productive willows of the early flow.
