Wisteria flowers in May in long, blue-violet racemes, usually before the leaves emerge. It is a vigorous twining climber on house walls and pergolas. The flowers have the typical pea-flower structure and have to be pushed open, which is why it is mainly bumblebees that open them. Honeybees then use the opened flowers and find nectar there. British measurements give around 310 micrograms of sugar per flower per day.
