The perennial cornflower flowers from May to July with deep blue, fringed ray florets around a purple centre. It comes from the low mountain ranges and the Alps and is one of the earliest knapweeds in the garden. In addition to the nectar in the flowers, there are small nectar glands on the bracts, which are also visited. British measurements give around 632 micrograms of sugar per flower per day.
