Water avens flowers from April to June with nodding, bell-shaped flowers in muted red and brown. It grows along stream banks, in wet meadows and damp woods. The flowers hang down and open only a little, so bumblebees use them first. Honeybees collect nectar where the flowers are open wide enough.
